Watering Tips for Hot Weather!
Watering during the heat of the day (between 10 AM and 6 PM) is the number one water waster. Especially with the extreme heat the Denver metro area has had in the past couple of weeks it is very important to water in the evening or even better in the early morning.
The mornings tend to have less wind than afternoons. Watering in the wind is not beneficial as the water seems to fly everyplace but where it is intended! Watch the weather reports and if heavy winds are forecast do not water.
Inspect your system regularly to catch leaks or problems with sprinkler heads. Don’t forget to check your valve box for leaks or for zone control valves that are leaking. A zone valve leak can be extremely costly due the fact that it is leaking 24 hours a day, instead of a leak on a zone pipe or a sprinkler head which will leak only when that zone is watering (10-25 minutes two or three days per week). If a sprinkler zone is not spraying as far as it has in the past chances are that you have a leak on that zone. Close inspection will be required to find a leak. If there is a small constant flow of water from only one sprinkler head causing a wet or mushy area that is an indication of a zone control valve leak. If you need assistance call a sprinkler company or landscape professional. The money you spend on the repair will quickly be saved on water not used!
Deep watering of trees and brown spots is an excellent way of getting the water to the roots without wasting water.
Remember Watering Guidelines!
No watering between the hours of 10AM and 6PM from May 1, 2007 to August 31, 2007. (Schedule does not apply to new sod and seed).
There are no designated watering days, however, it is strongly recommended to water two days per week and add an additional day during the very hottest time of the summer. To save additional water adjust the time watered for the month of the summer. For example, water less in May and September than in July and August. For specific watering time suggestions go to www.denverwater.org and click on the “2007 Water Use Program”. Or go to www.bancroft-clover.com and use the Water Resources link to Denver Water.
Denver Water’s Reservoirs Full!
For the first time in many years the raw water supply system of Denver Water is at or above 100% full. The system of lakes and reservoirs is actually at 101% of storage capacity and many are spilling over the dams. Denver Water is cautiously optimistic about the rest of the summer however the recent very hot weather has caused a dramatic increase in water usage. For a complete report on Denver Water’s water supply go to www.denverwater.org and click on the “Reservoir Levels and More” tab.
District Capital Project Complete for 2007
The District’s 2007 Capital Project consisted of the replacement of over 2,700 feet of older four-inch water pipe that was originally installed in the 1950’s. This pipe cannot provide the fire flows for new fire fighting equipment and is being upsized to six and eight-inch pipe. The 2007 project also consisted of replacement of all existing fire hydrants. The project cost was $361,135.40 and will be completed on time and under budget. The District greatly appreciates the cooperation and patience demonstrated by residents in the area during this very important project!
