Magazine Ranks Denver’s Water #1 out of 100 Cities!
Men’s Health Magazine has ranked Denver Water the best for water quality. The criteria were water quality reports that addressed levels of arsenic, lead, halo-acetic acids, and total trihalomethanes (which are linked to cancer). Also considered were total coliform bacteria testing results and the number of Environmental Protection Agency water quality violations between 1995 and 2005. Each year Denver Water produces a water quality report that is sent to all customers. The report for 2007 will be available and mailed to all Bancroft-Clover Water and Sanitation District customers in June.
Can You See The Fire Hydrant?
If there is a fire hydrant on or near your property that is covered by bushes it can take valuable time away from West Metro Fire Crews that are attempting to save lives and property. The fire department usually needs three feet of clearance in all directions to adequately attach fire hoses and operate that hydrant with out obstruction. Please take the time this spring to trim around the fire hydrants. If home or business owners have any questions or if you notice a “hiding” hydrant that needs attention please contact the District office at 303-922-1113.
Is Fire Hydrant Flushing Wasting Water?
Many customers have questions when they see District field crews running a large amount of water out of fire hydrants. Such as “why not just let everyone water for free to clear the water system”. During the winter months when there is very little water usage minor amounts of sediment can build up in the water distribution system. In order to clean the water main lines a large volume of water is required to clear the line and allow for the sediment to move and be flushed out of the system. Even if every one in a subdivision was using water at the same time there would not be enough velocity in the main lines to clear them of sediment. Also, especially after a winter such as this, all hydrants need to be operated to ensure that there was not any damage sustained and that the hydrant will work as designed in an emergency situation. If you see a damaged fire hydrant please contact the District office!
Watch the Weather Reports before Watering!
During this time of the year it is common for the Denver area to get snow and rain. Before watering the lawn take a look and see if we will get some precipitation in the area in next few days. If so it is advised to wait and see. If the forecast is not accurate then you could water. There were many district customers watering in mid March before soaking rains. It is not advised to turn on the irrigation systems until the beginning of May unless the system is winterized again after watering. There could still be temperatures that are cold enough to freeze sprinkler systems before we get to the warmer months. It is not uncommon for basements to get flooded when the sprinkler systems freeze and break. It is recommended to water using hoses early in the year and disconnect them after you water your lawn or landscape.
